I am a 74 year old 6’ tall female. While I am strong and fit, I was initially concerned that I might be “too old” to make use of the Freedom Leg. Fortunately, it works perfectly for me! 4 weeks ago I had a Total Ankle Replacement and I knew in advance that I would be non weight bearing for at least 6 weeks. I purchased my Freedom Leg 3 weeks in advance of the surgery so that I could practice using it. I was very glad that I did because using it is not really intuitive. I quickly became comfortable, but forgot to simulate the added weight of first the surgical splint (10 lbs) for the first 2 weeks and then a hard cast (12 lbs) for an additional 2 weeks. I found that I was most confident at first using both my Freedom Leg and crutches, to give me added stability until I gained the strength and confidence to walk hands free. I also found that wearing yoga pants allowed me to tighten the top strap around my thigh very securely as well as the strap below the knee. The less the brace moves around, the easier it is to pick up as you walk, so having it securely attached is key.
After my surgery I checked in to a rehab facility for a week, thinking that the therapists would have some tips and tricks for me to maximize the use of the Freedom Leg. None of them had ever seen the device and most were highly skeptical of it. I wound up delivering a master class to the PT professionals and the Director of Nursing for the facility. As soon as they understood the physics of it they were enthusiastic converts.
Moral of the story - you aren’t “too old” to use a Freedom Leg” if you are reasonably fit and motivated.
I had to be completely off my leg for three months, and after the first month, I was going absolutely mad. Being stuck and dependent on others was so frustrating. Then I found the Freedom Leg, and it truly changed everything.
This device gave me back my independence and confidence. I could move around freely, carry things, and actually live my life again — all while staying completely non–weight-bearing. It was amazing to be hands-free again after weeks of relying on crutches and scooters.
I even went to Hawaii during my recovery and was able to do a little hiking! The Freedom Leg made that possible. It’s comfortable, sturdy, and gives you back a sense of normalcy you don’t realize you’ve lost until you can’t walk.
Truly a game changer and worth every penny. I can’t recommend it enough for anyone who has to be non-weight-bearing for an extended period. It makes a difficult recovery so much easier and gives you your life back.
Great leg brace!! Despite having unusually thin thighs, the brace fit well and was very comfortable. It was easy to walk in it and definitely it is an enormous aid to mobility. Very high quality construction as well. Customer service was excellent. We returned the brace for reasons unrelated to the brace itself, and the return process was smooth and easy. FYI many insurances cover this as a medical device - please check with them!
They work amazing, I am able to walk without crutches and can be active and working. They are a live safer and I recommend these for sure.
