About Freedom Leg

Freedom Leg was established in 2009 after Joel, a former aerospace engineer at Boeing, found himself searching for a better mobility solution when his wife Patty suffered a serious knee injury. Traditional crutches proved to be limited, uncomfortable, and disruptive to Patty’s day-to-day job as a gymnastics coach. Joel believed there had to be a better way for people to remain mobile during recovery without sacrificing their independence.

Drawing from his expertise in engineering, his experience in designing and manufacturing recumbent bicycles, and his work designing mobility devices and wheelchairs through his and Patty’s company Forward Mobility, Joel developed a prosthetic that transferred her body weight onto her upper leg, allowing her to continue her daily tasks and work hands-free while still non-weight bearing.

What began as a home-grown prototype soon gained national attention. In 2009, Joel’s Freedom Leg Off-Loading Prosthetic earned him the “Newpreneur of the Year” award from Inc. Magazine and Alibaba.com, recognizing the innovation as a breakthrough in assistive technology.

As demand for a better alternative to crutches grew, Joel committed to refining the Freedom Leg design through extensive testing, feedback from medical professionals, and real-world user experience. The result was a highly functional, patented product that empowers people to stay active and independent while recovering from lower limb injuries.

Over the years, Freedom Leg has helped countless individuals walk confidently without relying on crutches or scooters. The hands-free crutch has even been utilized by soldiers, as units were sent to Iraq as a way for medics to quickly help injured soldiers off the battlefield. Joel’s journey – from witnessing a loved one’s frustration to launching a nationally recognized product –has been fueled by a passion for innovation and a deep empathy for the people who need it most.

Now on its third generation, Freedom Leg continues to evolve as a brand that stands for practical solutions, thoughtful design, and giving people the freedom to move forward.

A game changer for our teenage son

Our 15-year old son broke his tibia in jiu jitsu and had to have emergency surgery. The doctor said no weight-bearing for six weeks, which sounded like an eternity. I showed him Freedom Leg and they were agreeable to trying it. At week two our son felt comfortable enough to give it a shot. He took to it almost immediately and is going on two weeks with it now. It is great to get him out and about, socializing with friends again and he even was able to get to the chiropractor for an adjustment. I submitted for insurance reimbursement but even if that is denied, this is an affordable solution to improve quality of life dramatically during recovery.

So good!

This brace is the best!
I am an active, 60 year old lady who is 5’2, who just had foot surgery and will be off my foot for at least the next 2 months. I used a scooter, not the Freedom leg for the first 2 weeks because things needed to heal first and I fell over a least three times on the scooter, lol (hurting my surgery area in the process).
But once I started wearing my Freedom Leg 3.0 I had no problems. I can walk up and down the stairs, do laundry, vacuum, do dishes, etc. I do use a cane when walking long distances or difficult situations like the stairs, going into the yard or getting into the car while my husband takes me to my doctor appointment.
I love this thing!!! I recommend you get this before your surgery if at all possible. That way you can adjust it to fit correctly before the real event AND you can practice walking with it with confidence before you no longer can. I found that to be a huge benefit for me and my situation. Also, after I got it, I had two questions about the product at two different times before my surgery and when I called they were always available and helpful.
During my first visit after surgery to my foot doctor in January 2026 my doctor asked me about it. He had not heard of it. At my second visit the doctor said they were so impressed that they have added it to their recommendations to their patients. And as I walked out of the building another patients just stared at it in wonder and asked what it was and where to get it cause thats what she needed, lol. She was on a knee scooter. Yes, I truly recommend this thing. Also, I don’t EVER use social media but I wrote a review on it because it has changed my life for the better for the last few weeks while I heal. I hope it does the same for you as well. Sending you best wishes in your recovery!

changed my husband's life!

We call it his Wonder Leg - A tree-working accident damaged the entire right side of his body leaving him unable to use crutches. The Freedom Leg enabled him to be upright and get around with relative ease. Not only was he able to be mobile, his frame of mind returned to his usual cheeriness with the independence. Cannot say enough about the help our family gained with the help of Freedom Leg - Thank you!

Save your energy and walk with confidence

I have zero weight bearing restrictions from a Lisfranc injury/broken foot. The ER gave me crutches but I fell off of them so many times I was covered in bruises and weak from it. I was also exhausted dragging myself around the house with limited upper body strength from cervical issues.

This has helped so much. I am extra cautious so I use it with a walker most of the time, although if I can touch a wall I can walk without the walker. I am much more confident and feel safter. The best part is the ability to walk up and down stairs with ease (and even carrying something in a bag). It's also easier to get to the car when I go out. Freedom Leg has made a difficult time so much easier. Thank you for inventing this.

Note: fitting this to your leg is key in using it well and comfortably. It took me a few tries to get it right. Once you do I think you will love it. For me the key was getting the knee pad in the right place so that my leg could not move down, then fitting the bottom strap, then the top Find what works best for you.

Wonderful product but he couldn’t use it due to his poor balance

The freedom leg was well made. Due to my health condition I was unable to use it. The service was amazing.
Even though the 14 days to return the leg had passed they were great about accepting it and refunding our money. I tried for a couple of weeks to use it hoping I would get used to it but I am just too unstable. Thanks guys for being so good to work with. Good product and great service
