Broken ankle · ankle surgery
Broken ankle or ankle surgery? Keep both hands free while it heals.
The Freedom Leg is a hands-free crutch. Your weight rests on the back of your thigh, and your injured ankle stays off the ground, in your boot or cast.
What it means while your ankle heals
- Fits over your boot or castThe side rails are 6.25 inches apart, which fits most walking boots and casts. Measure your boot at mid-foot to be sure.
- Both hands freeCarry a coffee, cook, open doors and take the stairs while you hold the railing.
- Sit down without taking it offThe brace stays on when you sit, so you are not stuck taking it off and on all day.
- Your ankle stays in front of youYour foot stays where you can see and protect it, and it physically cannot step down.
Common questions
Will it fit over my walking boot or cast?
Most likely. There are 6.25 inches between the side rails. Measure the width of your boot or cast at mid-foot. For a large boot, the shin pad comes out to make room. Take your size measurements while wearing the boot.
When can I start using it?
When your surgeon or care team says you can be up and moving without putting weight on the foot.
Start with short practice sessions of 10 to 15 minutes. You need good balance and upper-body strength; the brace is tested to 300 lb.
Can I use it on stairs?
Yes. You can take the stairs with both hands free to hold the railing. Watch how to walk on stairs first.
Does insurance pay for it?
We can't bill insurance, but we email you an invoice with the HCPCS code (L2136) to submit with a prescription. Plans vary; some customers have been reimbursed. HSA and FSA cards work.

Not sure it's right for you? Ask Sophie.
The Freedom Leg is a mobility aid, not a treatment. Your surgeon or care team decides when you can be up and how much weight your foot can take. Request a return within 14 days of delivery if it isn't right for you.
