About Freedom Leg

Freedom Leg was established in 2009 after Joel, a former aerospace engineer at Boeing, found himself searching for a better mobility solution when his wife Patty suffered a serious knee injury. Traditional crutches proved to be limited, uncomfortable, and disruptive to Patty’s day-to-day job as a gymnastics coach. Joel believed there had to be a better way for people to remain mobile during recovery without sacrificing their independence.

Drawing from his expertise in engineering, his experience in designing and manufacturing recumbent bicycles, and his work designing mobility devices and wheelchairs through his and Patty’s company Forward Mobility, Joel developed a prosthetic that transferred her body weight onto her upper leg, allowing her to continue her daily tasks and work hands-free while still non-weight bearing.

What began as a home-grown prototype soon gained national attention. In 2009, Joel’s Freedom Leg Off-Loading Prosthetic earned him the “Newpreneur of the Year” award from Inc. Magazine and Alibaba.com, recognizing the innovation as a breakthrough in assistive technology.

As demand for a better alternative to crutches grew, Joel committed to refining the Freedom Leg design through extensive testing, feedback from medical professionals, and real-world user experience. The result was a highly functional, patented product that empowers people to stay active and independent while recovering from lower limb injuries.

Over the years, Freedom Leg has helped countless individuals walk confidently without relying on crutches or scooters. The hands-free crutch has even been utilized by soldiers, as units were sent to Iraq as a way for medics to quickly help injured soldiers off the battlefield. Joel’s journey – from witnessing a loved one’s frustration to launching a nationally recognized product –has been fueled by a passion for innovation and a deep empathy for the people who need it most.

Now on its third generation, Freedom Leg continues to evolve as a brand that stands for practical solutions, thoughtful design, and giving people the freedom to move forward.

Workable Solution

Great solution for staying off foot and ankle while being upright.

Extremely effective

I had foot surgery two weeks ago that required me to stay off my foot for at least two months. I’m not one to stay at home or be inactive after surgery. I’m also fiercely independent - I don’t have or want a caretaker.

My friend warned me that standard crutches were difficult to use, but I didn’t believe him. He was right! They hurt my armpits, wrists, hands, and shoulder, and I couldn’t do any household chores with them. Even extra padding on the crutches (armpits and hands) wasn’t overly helpful. They still hurt.

I found Freedom Leg 3.0 online, and it was covered by my FSA. Freedom Leg allowed me to do so much more than standard crutches. At home, I could cook, clean, do the laundry, make my bed, water the plants, wash the dishes, carry things, and much more, none of which I was able to do with crutches. Outside the house, I could go to work, eat at restaurants, shop at the grocery store and farmers market, ride crowded trains and buses (sometimes standing room only), attend house parties and garden parties, go to bars, walk though street fairs, and work out at the gym, all with confidence. (I told you I was active!) If I had knee crutches instead and my foot was sticking out behind me, I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing many of those activities. I would probably avoid all crowds. With Freedom Leg, I could easily navigate crowded spaces, which is critical in busy San Francisco.

I remove Freedom Leg in some circumstances, like at work, in restaurants, and at the gym on some machines. It’s quick and easy to put back on.

Going up and down steps with Freedom Leg is much easier than with crutches. I abide by the same rule - up with the good; down with the bad.

Problems with Freedom Leg have been minimal. My first cast was open at the shin, and that wasn’t too comfortable, so my second cast was intentional built to cover my shin. Also, I didn’t like the base pins or the optional base bolts provided. Both stuck out too far on the inside and rubbed up against my cast. I covered the base bolts with duct tape, but that wasn’t a good permanent fix. Also, one of the base bolts came undone. So I went to a hardware store and got bolts with flatter heads and sturdier screws for just a few dollars. That was an easy fix. I did fall once with the Freedom Leg, but that was because I inadvertently stepped into a pothole. I do have to remind myself constantly to fully lift my Freedom Leg with each step so it doesn’t get stuck. I usually bring a cane if I’m venturing out of the house. Lastly, going down the steep hills of San Francisco is challenging. Going up the hills is much easier.

In summary, I’m extremely happy with Freedom Leg 3.0, and I would definitely buy it again if given the choice. Two full months with my foot in a cast would have miserable without Freedom Leg.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT INVENTION!

This genius device is by far the best mobility option available and it is not even close! I've had every mobility device imaginable and the Freedom Leg is in a category by itself. Literally the first time I ever tried it I was mobile and hands free. Yes, there is a slight learning curve to become really comfortable because this is something new that you are experiencing. But literally my first walk was successful and so freeing emotionally. Hands free and mobile immediately, what a joy when you are immobile otherwise. If you are on the fence about this product please look at as many reviews and videos as you can because you'll really be doing yourself a favor. Yes, it costs a lot but it is worth every penny. You really can't put a price on the freedom this device gives you. Plus, it is usually covered by your insurance. Just message the staff at Freedom Leg to get the medical device number and give that to your insurance and they can look it up to see if it is covered, most likely it will be. This is what I did it was covered 100%. Even if it is not, this will be one of the best investments you'll ever make. Any money you've spent on crutches, scooters or any other walking device is really just wasted money. Once you use the Freedom Leg you will understand completely. And look at it this way, once you throw away all those other useless things, which you will definitely do, you'll be clearing up some room in your house to do things while wearing your Freedom Leg...

Slight challenge with hard cast

Have had it for about 3 weeks now and have been highly impressed. Positioning it while wearing a hard leg cast was a bit tricky at first , but I figured it out it good to go. I believe it will be more comfortable once I get out of the hard cast and into a soft boot. Can’t wait!!!
